Peter Dickinson actually figured out how they could realistically fly back in the 80s in his book The Flight of Dragons. While it is correct that they could not fly the way a bird does with the wings generating the lift, they could fly like a blimp does if their diet included the materials necessary to create hydrogen gas through digestion. This also explains why they breath fire.
